    peer-reviewedIncreasing concentrations ofCO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are leading to concern worldwide due to their contribution to the greenhouse effect. As the body of evidence supporting the need for change from a carbon rich economy/society becomes stronger, international mitigation agreements require high quality and precise information. Following the Kyoto Protocol and EU agreements to reduce carbon production, countries could utilise default values or comparable international data to calculate their carbon budgets. Initially, approximations were successful for generating a guide to a national carbon stock for reporting GHG inventories to the UNFCCC (Tier 1 ). However, now that the second phase of the Kyoto protocol is running until 2020, greater accuracy is essential and, where possible, nationally specific information is increasingly required (Tier 3, UNFCCC). Forestry and forest soils are seen as a key component in the carbon cycle and depending on their management, can mitigate or contribute to GHG emissions. Litter and soil organic matter (SOM) are two of the major carbon pools required for reporting under LULUCF. In this study, stocks of SOM and litter were recorded along a chronosequence of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) on wet mineral gley soil. Over a 47-year period, the rate of soil carbon sequestration was found to be 1 .83 t C ha−1 yr−1 . Soil microbial biomass was used to estimate highly active SOM. The mineral soils were also fractionated in a density separation procedure to identify light and heavy SOM pools. These estimates can now be used to model carbon budgets of this most common soil type currently under forestry in Ireland.The Irish National Council for Forest Research and Development provided funding for this work as part of the CARBiFOR research project

    Following a federal jury trial, losing litigants may seek a new trial by challenging, or impeaching, the validity of the jury\u27s verdict. It is well recognized that, unlike fine wine, steaks, and cheese, lawsuits do not improve with age because as time passes, memories fade, witnesses become unavailable, and evidence is often lost. Accordingly, society has as interest verdict finality, but few would deny a litigant, especially a criminal defendant, a new trial if the jury\u27s verdict was tainted by something external to the protections of the courtroom. Federal Rule of Evidence 606(b) generally prohibits juror testimony to impeach a jury verdict; hence, it protects the individual jurors from, inter alia, harassment by losing litigants and it protects society\u27s interest in verdict finality. However, an outright prohibition of juror testimony may destroy the only evidence that shows a tainted or mistaken verdict, thus Rule 606(b) has carved out three exceptions under which a juror may testify. One exception permits juror testimony concerning extraneous prejudicial information. The Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit recently addressed this little-known rule in Arreola v. Choudry. While the court correctly addressed the merits in this case, it provided little guidance to the district courts for future application of extraneous prejudicial information under Rule 606(b). This article will attempt to clarify how to determine extraneous prejudicial information and how courts should proceed when such information was present during deliberations

    Pedotransfer functions for Irish soils – estimation of bulk density (ρb) per horizon type

It describes the packing structure of the soil and is also essential for the measurement of soil carbon stock and nutrient assessment. In many older surveys this property was neglected and in many modern surveys this property is omitted due to cost both in laboratory and labour and in cases where the core method cannot be applied. To overcome these oversights pedotransfer functions are applied using other known soil properties to estimate bulk density. Pedotransfer functions have been derived from large international data sets across many studies, with their own inherent biases, many ignoring horizonation and depth variances. Initially pedotransfer functions from the literature were used to predict different horizon type bulk densities using local known bulk density data sets. Then the best performing of the pedotransfer functions were selected to recalibrate and then were validated again using the known data. The predicted co-efficient of determination was 0.5 or greater in 12 of the 17 horizon types studied. These new equations allowed gap filling where bulk density data were missing in part or whole soil profiles. This then allowed the development of an indicative soil bulk density map for Ireland at 0–30 and 30–50 cm horizon depths. In general the horizons with the largest known data sets had the best predictions, using the recalibrated and validated pedotransfer functions.Environmental Protection Agenc

    Visual drainage assessment: A standardised visual soil assessment method for use in land drainage design in Ireland

    peer-reviewedThe implementation of site-specific land drainage system designs is usually disregarded by landowners in favour of locally established ‘standard practice’ land drainage designs. This is due to a number of factors such as a limited understanding of soil–water interactions, lack of facilities for the measurement of soil’s physical or hydrological parameters and perceived time wastage and high costs. Hence there is a need for a site-specific drainage system design methodology that does not rely on inaccessible, time-consuming and/or expensive measurements of soil physical or hydrological properties. This requires a standardised process for deciphering the drainage characteristics of a given soil in the field. As an initial step, a new visual soil assessment method, referred to as visual drainage assessment (VDA), is presented whereby an approximation of the permeability of specific soil horizons is made using seven indicators (water seepage, pan layers, texture, porosity, consistence, stone content and root development) to provide a basis for the design of a site-specific drainage system. Across six poorly drained sites (1.3 ha to 2.6 ha in size) in south-west Ireland a VDA-based design was compared with (i) an ideal design (utilising soil physical measurements to elucidate soil hydraulic parameters) and (ii) a standard design (0.8 m deep drains at a 15 m spacing) by model estimate of water table control and rainfall recharge/drain discharge capacity. The VDA method, unlike standard design equivalents, provided a good approximation of an ideal (from measured hydrological properties) design and prescribed an equivalent land drainage system in the field. Mean modelled rainfall recharge/drain discharge capacity for the VDA (13.3 mm/day) and ideal (12.0 mm/day) designs were significantly higher (P < 0.001, s.e. 1.42 mm/day) than for the standard designs (0.5 mm/day), when assuming a design minimum water table depth of 0.45 m

    Mapping Soils in Ireland

    peer-reviewedThis project is jointly funded by Teagasc and EPA STRIVE funding.Harmonised soil data across Europe with a 1:250 000 geo-referenced soil database will allow for exchange of data across member states and the provide the information needed for reporting on issues re-lating to soil quality under a future Soil Framework Directive. The current status of soils data available in Eu-rope is inconsistent at best. The Irish Soil Information System (ISIS) project is currently developing a national soil map of 1:250,000 and an associated digital soil information system, providing both spatial and quantita-tive information on soil types and properties across Ireland. Both the map and the information system will be freely available to the public through a designated website.This project is jointly funded by Teagasc and EPA STRIVE funding

    Soil organic carbon stocks by soil group for afforested soils in Ireland

    Forest ecosystems are recognised as Natural Climate Solutions because forest soils are such important carbon stores, containing almost half of the total soil organic carbon of terrestrial ecosystems. Here we present the results of a synthesis of soil carbon stocks by World Reference Base soil group, and forest litter carbon stocks for afforested soils in the Republic of Ireland. We report soil carbon stocks of mineral soils separately from organo-mineral soils. We estimated mean soil carbon stocks in a 100 cm deep mineral soil to be between 162 ± 87 t C/ha (Gleysols) and 416 ± 0 t C/ha (Umbrisols, n = 1), and between 173 ± 65 t C/ha (Phaeozems) and 602 ± 226 t C/ha (Regosols) in a 100 cm deep organo-mineral soil; both less than the estimated soil carbon stocks in organic soils (Histosols): 645 ± 222 t C/ha. The entire soil carbon stocks in mineral Leptosols (100 ± 0 t C/ha, n = 1), Stagnosols (144 ± 39 t C/ha), Luvisols (159 ± 52 t C/ha) and Fluvisols (231 ± 0 t C/ha, n = 1) was contained in the upper 50 cm of soil. Based on a 100 cm deep soil, Histosols hold 1.6–4 times the amount of soil C than mineral soils and 1.1–3.7 times the amount in organo-mineral soils for the same profile depth. Certain mineral (e.g. Umbrisols) and organo-mineral soils (e.g Gleysols, Regosols) contain substantial soil carbon stocks relative to Histosols. We found considerable soil carbon stocks below 30 cm depth, which highlights the importance of depth extent for cumulative soil carbon stocks estimates. The upper third of the 100 cm profile contained 33% (Histosols) to 70% (Luvisols) of the soil carbon stocks and the upper half of a 100 cm profile contained the entire soil carbon stocks for Leptosols, Stagnosols, Luvisols and Fluvisols and organo-mineral Leptosols. Unfortunately, there were few samples available for mineral Leptosols, Umbrisols, Luvisols and Fluvisols, and the organo-mineral Stagnosols and Regosols, which precludes the drawing of conclusions for these groups. Relative to the soil carbon stocks, we found low mean forest litter stocks: 4.1 ± 5.5 t C/ha, 4.8 ± 3.3 t C/ha and 2.7 ± 2.9 t C/ha for broadleaf, coniferous and mixed forests respectively. Few exceptions existed for individual sites: 22.7 and 131.3 t C/ha for broadleaf forests. Our results are evidence that soil carbon stocks in mineral, organo-mineral and organic soils need to be protected, appropriately managed, and enhanced to be beneficial for greenhouse gas mitigation. Assessments are needed to identify which soil-site-management practice combinations risk soil carbon stock depletion. The large range observed in soil and litter carbon stocks stresses the importance of adequately accounting for soil group differences when GHG inventories are compiled. The synthesised dataset will contribute to improved SCS estimation for afforested lands in Ireland

    Creating a community of praxis: integrating global citizenship and development education across campus at University College Cork

    The Praxis Project, established at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, in 2018, seeks to assess possible models of best practice with regard to the integration of global citizenship and development education (GCDE) into a cross-disciplinary, cross-campus, interwoven set of subject area pedagogies, policies and practices. This study – the first part of an eventual three-part framework – asserts that the themes, theories, values, skills, approaches and methodologies relevant to transformative pedagogical work are best underpinned by ongoing staff dialogue in order to build communities of support around such systemic pedagogical change. This article is based on a collaborative study with the first cohort of UCC staff (2020–1), which demonstrates many ways in which staff and students realised that smaller actions and carefully directed attention to specific issues opened doors to transformative thinking and action in surprising ways. From this viewpoint, the striking need emerged for taking a strategic approach to how GCDE is, and should be, integrated into learning across subject areas

    Age of Child, More than HPV Type, Is Associated with Clinical Course in Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis

    Background: RRP is a devastating disease in which papillomas in the airway cause hoarseness and breathing difficulty. The disease is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), 6 or 11 and is very variable. Patients undergo multiple surgeries to maintain a patent airway and in order to communicate vocally. Several small studies have been published in which most have noted that HPV 11 is associated with a more aggressive course. Methodology/Principal Findings: Papilloma biopsies were taken from patients undergoing surgical treatment of RRP and were subjected to HPV typing. 118 patients with juvenile-onset RRP with a least 1 year of clinical data and infected with a single HPV type were analyzed. HPV 11 was encountered in 40% of the patients. By our definition, most of the patients in the sample (81%) had run an aggressive course. The odds of a patient with HPV 11 running an aggressive course were 3.9 times higher that that of patients with HPV 6 (Fisher's exact p=0.017). However, clinical course was more closely associated with age of the patient (at diagnosis and at the time of the current surgery) than with HPV type. Patients with HPV 11 were diagnosed at a younger age (2.4y) than were those with HPV 6 (3.4y) (p=0.014). Both by multiple linear regression and by multiple logistics regression HPV type was only weakly associated with metrics of disease course when simultaneously accounting for age. Conclusions/Significance Abstract: The course of RRP is variable and a quarter of the variability can be accounted for by the age of the patient. HPV 11 is more closely associated with a younger age at diagnosis than it is associated with an aggressive clinical course. These data suggest that there are factors other than HPV type and age of the patient that determine disease course. © 2008 Buchinsky et al
